This is probably one of the most engaging series I've ever read. It's a fantasy setting with some magic thrown in, but Bakker has taken all of it to a whole new level. The characters are amazing and the story is really great.
They are broken up into 2 arcs so far - The first 3 are a "complete" trilogy that follows the mission of Kellhaus to find his father.
The next 2 are part of a second trilogy that picks up about 20 years or so after the first trilogy ends and is awesome.
If you have any interest in fantasy, history (the first trilogy parallels the first Crusade), sociology, or just a good story, you should check it out.
