I don't know if it's my official duty to start these feedback threads or anything, but I'm just gonna keep doing it.
Friday, 2/8/13. The night we tried to take back Indar.
Hoo boy, where to begin.
Well, let's start with the obvious. Since Spec Ops began, this was possibly our worst start to a night ever, and arguably one of our best finishes.
It's worth saying up front that we faced a hugely overwhelming force, with blatant and overt collusion between the VS and the NC. The most conservative estimates put us facing over 9 platoons that evening AT A MINIMUM. We set out to take back Indar. We were psyched for it, we all thought it was going to happen, we thought that having held the enemy at bay all week, we could crush our foes and regain the continent with our combined might.
Needless to say, we were wrong. We did not take Indar. There were many great pushes, but we did not expand far past our initial battle lines. The TR were a mighty spear, with our outfit inarguably at the head of that spear, with our troops pushing further behind enemy lines by far than any other. Thus, Spec Ops were at the very tip of that spear, and that spear was plunged deep into a giant pile of shit.
Should we be disappointed in ourselves for our failure? I mean, sure, it was a very frustrating night, and let's face it, our goal was to take Indar, and we failed.
But what we did do is arguably more important. The whole of the VS and NC population converged on us last night. Esamir and Amerish were all but empty. Even if we didn't take the continent, we still held our ground.
What does this say about us, as Spec Ops, as an Outfit, as a Faction?
We are as good or better than literally every other player on Connery put together. We can stand up against the ENTIRETY of the enemy force and hold our ground. That's pretty goddamn awesome.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Notes specifically on Spec Ops.
We did not have good coverage on all our roles. We struggled especially with armor. When the enemy rolled tanks in, it shut us down basically every time. We sacrificed our heavies to play the various support roles that keep us moving, and it really, really showed.
What we could still do well was very rapidly flip bases with light resistance/no tanks or air. I kept track when we dropped, and we're down to less than thirty seconds between dropping out and securing the base (terminals hacked, point flipped, spawn watched, base and all buildings scouted, and A point flipped). That's really goddamn good. Next week, I'm going to literally get a stopwatch and time us.
We got sloppy with our deploying. Very sloppy. Basically everything we did involving a vehicle was a mess, whether driving one, destroying one, or loading in to one. We HAVE to start resupplying and preparing for the next fight during the down time while the base flips. We should NOT be going to the terminals to resupply and pull whatever AFTER the base flips. We should be ready to go ten seconds before the base turns red, if not earlier.
Probably a lot of that had to do with the combination of an underpowered Spec Ops squad, and the circumstances of the spear-in-shit metaphor.
tl;dr- What did we learn?
There are still some things we do very well as a small squad, but we must avoid vehicular combat if we aren't stocked with heavies, and instead focus on the rapid acquisition of the large swaths of uncontested territory.
We are fast enough to flip points and stay 2 steps ahead of those that would back-cap or try and stop us. We should use that to our advantage and lead the enemy on a goose chase.
Speaking of chasers, we also learned that even with the way this op went, alcohol can fix anything. Furthermore, we can still take a base in proper sequence just on instinct, even while wasted. Mmmmm.... scotch.
