I was trying to wait a year before I started overclocking this cpu... I failed, but made it several months. Now have a 25% BCLK overclock without much extra heat but the stock cpu fan stays loud and gets really loud.
I have this nice phanteks cooler here, but it won't fit in my mid-tower (with the side on). The sink fits, but the included fans don't. Been thinking I may just stick a couple of 140mm fans on it and do better than stock, but would like to use the fans that came with the heatsink.
To the point: some of you play with hardware. Anyone know a good case that has 171mm of clearance for the cpu cooler? Better yet, anyone know a funky "deep" mid tower with that much clearance and a couple of 20-1 usb 3.0 connectors? I don't need a full tower I'll give up the internal usb 3.0, but, you know, in a perfect world...
I've spent too much time the past couple nights on reviews and downloading manuals and trying not to buy one of those cheesy 120mm self-contained water coolers. Any advice appreciated.

You don't need a full tower but just buying one would save you the headache....

You might want to check out the Cooler Master HAF 922. It has a 200mm fan on top and one on the front. 171mm might be pushing it, but you might be able to get away with it. The case is pushed out a bit where a CPU heatsink would be so you might have a good 5mm of clearance past the 200mm . Putting fans on the side might be pushing it, but without, it looks like it could fit. I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO that sticks up 159mm (according to the specs on Newegg) and it has plenty of room. It's a very large, robust, and spacious mid tower. It was a lot larger than I expected when I looked at other mid towers on the market. It's probably more of a 3/4 tower. I also have absolutely no heat problems anywhere.
edit: Also has 2 USB 3.0 ports, audio and mic jacks, and an e-SATA port on the front.

Will look at the HAF 922. Had checked out the 942 and not enough room there. I might have a little wiggle room if I slide the clip mounted fans as low as possible.
Have been hoping to find a HAF "v2" or something with direct usb 3.0 support. Not finding such a thing.
Right now thinking I'll get a couple of 140's and make decent use of this cheapo case that I have now. Still, can anyone point me towards what I'm after below $350?

I've got the 922's big brother, the 932. Any of the HAF series tends to be fairly spacious, well thought out designs. Built like tanks too if you plan to do any case modding or moving around with them.

922 lists 160mm as max. Don't see anything specific for the 932, but the dimensions look the same there. The search continues tomorrow.

Well, maybe going with a full tower might be your only option. The HAF 932 boasts a 230mm fan on the front. I think it would be safe to say that it could give you the space you need. If the 922 has a 160mm max and has a 200mm fan on the front, it might be safe to say that you'll get that extra 11mm plus with the 932. There's also a sale on it right now through the 2nd. You could get $30 off plus an extra $10 off bring the price down from $159 to $119. Quite a bargain, I would say. That's on newegg.

Had discounted the 932 after seeing the 922 and the 942 wouldn't work. I'm happy to say that it looks like I was wrong. It looks like the new version of the 932 has what I'm after with 1.1mm to spare.
... but... but... if I'm going to have room for a nice big radiator...

I use the corsair h-100 with the inwin dragonrider case, running planetside with 70% overclock (i7-930 from 2.8 to 4.3) running 39 degree cpu temps. The hyper 212 won't do that but it is also not $90, good bang for the buck cooler the hyper 212, just depends how much overclock you want....I like the haf 932, good case, check out the rosewill thor as well.

I have a 932A on the way. Thanks for the advice. I wouldn't have looked that closely at the 932.
Btw, have switched from a 25% BCLK oc to a simple ratio oc and am getting a little more cpu (4.3 instead of 4.25) with far less heat. It doesn't take long to get the cpu way too hot in a stress test, but it's been awhile since ps2 made all the cores work that hard.
Now, though, how long before I think I need to water cool? I'm going to try to make it into next year. Yea, I game with headphones, but those little 120 mm fans tend to get LOUD...

Water cooling, I have no idea. But, hey! No problem on the advice. It's not like I have anything else to do while I'm at work! (Been completely engrossed by Star Citizen forums and lore mostly)
Also, I hear ya on those 120mm fans. I have 2 on the side of my 922 and I can hear em with headphones!

HAF 132A backplate hole offset funny. Had to pull the board out again to mount the heatsink!.
Mad about that, but it's mitigated by the fact that I've been running stable at 100% cpu (8 threads of prime 95) for almost half an hour.
Also crappy molex connectors for the fans. I expected more from CM. Mad about that, but it's mitigated by the fact that I'm about to put a pan on top of the case and fry up some eggs before I game a little more tonight.

I had the same problem with the backplate in my 922. Figured it would be better in the 32. Glad it's workin out for ya though!
