Quote from this article from the first person interviewed:
"There were nights where I'd be up until 3 am drinking beer and playing Team Fortress and chasing those silly hats with purple text, ignoring the gambler's fallacy and swearing that if I dropped another $50 I'd be sure to win this time," he adds. "Then I'd wake up the next morning and see that I'd not only spent over a hundred dollars on digital hats, but failed my only objective by uncrating a bunch of junk."
Those were the mornings that felt the worst -- when the reality of what Chris was doing hit home the hardest. He'd feel hugely depressed and worthless, and swear to himself that he wouldn't be back again... and yet, the moment another paycheck came through, it was gone as quickly as it came." - Chris
I have no sympathy for this idiot. He is just like any addict and unlike many addicts I know who went through some major shit to fall as far as they did (domestic abuse, PTSD, drugs, etc) he blames his wife working night shifts and being alone. What a fucking waste of oxygen.
Not sure if I'm a dick for thinking this way but the less money these people have the better off everyone else is as it limits their ability (in theory) to procreate and spread their stupidity.
The person who dropped $30,000 on eRepublik should just be taken out behind a barn and shot twice in the head for the betterment of society. Period. Might also want to take a long look at anyone willing to hire that idiot and pay them a decent enough wage to afford to spend 30k on a game.

Not sure what you bought Swatz but I'm looking at about $350 worth of games for a grand total of $64.74. That is about how much a single new game costs if you include tax.

It's more about that gambler's high that these kinds of games can create. It's why I don't play CCGs anymore. I have a serious problem with opening packs. I spent hundreds of dollars on Pox Nora and Warlord chasing those rare cards. You get into that "just one more pack" mentality and suddenly you've seriously over-spent.
I get what the article is saying and agree that players need to be aware that this is a thing that can happen if you let it get out of hand. I get that we, as players, need to watch out for games and companies that are trying to monetize this kind of behavior because they will do their best to exploit it to their benefit. When you walk into a casino, you should know what to expect. When you're gaming, you may not understand what you're getting yourself into with certain pay systems.
What I don't agree with is the call for industrial or government oversight. I will always advocate personal responsibility and oppose getting crooks like politicians or lawyers involved in anything.

Really the solution would be to make it apparent how much money you have spent in total since the beginning of the year. Watch how many people all of a sudden stop this behavior. Big sign: You have spent $$$$$ since January 1, 2013.
