They sell out every hour. They release a certain number of keys (5, 10, 256, ect.) every hour and when they're gone, they're gone. Then, next hour, there's more,
I got very lucky with my purchase. The auction I bought in on hasn't been duplicated since then. I advise that you either decide in advance how much you want to pay for the game (I picked 20$), then spring for it at that price.
Or (or additionally), you can decide to buy when there's X number of keys left that hour. For example, having already decided I'd pay no more than 20$ for the key, I decided I'd buy when there were 50/256 left (I'd recommend about half left for smaller numbers). It just so happened that 4$ was the price at that point.
Just remember, a lot of people are using that logic, and keys tend to disappear fast when there's few left. The numbers remaining started plummeting rapidly after about 2/3 of the keys had been sold.
As long as they keep doing five an hour, it's tough to gauge by these measures, so I suppose you're on your own. The number they do an hour changes from time to time, though, so maybe just wait.

So, what is the deal with this game? Ya'll enjoying it? Will it ever reach an actual release?
Looks a shit load better the 7 Days to Die, production wise.

I got in as well. Managed to run around, almost get spotted by a plane(!), nearly starve, nearly get eaten by wolves and a bear, and fail to be build a shelter before logging off.
In short, it's a keeper.

The planes are actually supply drops. Because it's a very recognizable noise and the supplies fall slowly by parachute, they attract attention from far and wide. Happens once a day.
Everyone describes the resulting clash for the supplies says it's like the Hunger Games. It's easily the biggest bloody clusterfuck in the game right now by far.
Worst thing that could ever happen to you, by my measure, is a supply drop landing on or near your house.

To nab a key.... you will have much better luck with the auctions that have more than 5 keys...those have mostly been going at around the 30-25 $ range. I got my key for about 12$ during an auction with 20 keys. Just keep watching the auction page...you will hit a strike price you like eventually.
And yea, the game is well worth it.. well well worth it.

HAH, 90 bucks!? Count me out until it's released!
edit- lol, I am just refreshed it at 1:18am, it is going at 80$. Gonna keep an eye on it. 3 out 3 left.
edit- missed it, lol. Started playing PS2 and alt tabbed five minutes after the hour. 3 out 3, 110$, 2:05 am.
edit- managed to follow one, I pressed it with 1 left, and at around 26$... must have pressed it the exact same time as some one else... didn't get it. The first two I think sold in the 30-40$ range. This is a very interesting and awesome way to buy a game.
edit- tonight it looked like the sweet spot for the last key was 25$ - 30$. It sat on 2 out of 3 for awhile so if you are trying get one on the 3 key auctions, I think the cheapest you could guarantee it is 30$ or so. It regularly made to under 30$ but never 25$. Should've pulled the trigger on 9$ earlier this week.

This auction system is brilliant and is probably functioning exactly as intended. A whole bunch of people were let into the alpha over the past week or two as prices dropped. This built hype, increasing demand... just as the keys dried up. After a hiatus, it comes back expensive, so the people most buying that hype are gonna pay the price to get in.
A very interesting case study in controlling (and generating) supply and demand. The auction is one of the most interesting aspects to the game for me.

I don't think a private server would be any fun. Part of the thrill of the game, at least for me, is surviving and thriving under threat of constant death. Having a private server would take away that threat with smaller player base and most of us probably being friends. Sure, it is frustrating to get shot in the face as your begging for your life because some random dude wants the wood and stone he just saw you pick up but it is still fun to survive, loot, and kill. As we become more experienced with the game, locations, and strategies to play I think we will end up controlling a large part of the map (once alpha ends and they stop wiping every day or two at least).
As a side note there is a PVE server available for the weak of heart.

They are selling out between 40$ and 50$ now. Well, you can count me out... sad, the game looked fun. Yeah, the auction is fucking brilliant. 50$ for a game that isn't even guaranteed to be completed one day, but I would put my money on it will be and it will be a 50$ title.
Maybe, some "private" servers will pop up and I will get some time in this game that way. edit- the 10 key auctions seem to sell out at the 20$ to 25$, I was aiming for under 15$ but I gotta go pass out.
