This show is worth watching, and hilarious.
HOWEVER, this show is clearly (like most shows in it's genre) left leaning.
I thoroughly enjoy this show, and I gave up on watching the Daily Show and Colbert Report in 2007; for the same reasons this show is great.
1. This show has the ability to of being free of ads and uncensored. In that regard, it is able to go where the Daily Show hints at. It is not vulgar, for the sake of being vulgar; but being uncensored allows it to say what it wants to say.
2. It is not dependent upon ad revenue. This frees the show from holding back, due to seekimg sponsorship. A good example, is in the second episode; when the show took an upopular view (in terms of American surveys) towards the death penalty for an extended amount of time.
3. Being a weekly show, the writer's are not dependent upon the daily media overturn. They have the advantage to pick out stories from around the world, and give a solid 5 to 10 minutes; really digging into the issue. It is the quality of story selection which gives the show its strength.
4. John Oliver is worth the price of admission. Being a Brit, which he makes no attempt to hide; provides him the unique position of experiencing American media while remaining an outsider. Good, strong commentary from him and his staff.
5. It is able to simply go further. A lot of the best parts of this show are available online, with unabridged and uncensored interviews.
I really think, given a few years, this show will really pick up in strength without suffering from the qualities of a subjective host (say the overwhelming Bill Maher *whose documentary Religious was almost unwatchable due to his bias*)
To declare my bias, I am currently a grad student seeking a Masters in Public Administration. I am left leaning in social policy. IF you are upset by a show that believes in climate change (blah blah blah research that you don't believe in) and the fact that America executes innocent people at a frequency that involves debate (blah blah blah innocence project and their hard quantifiable statistics) PLEASE don't give this show a gander.
Finally, the suggestion of this show has political implications that are not indicative of the higher leadership of TXR, and this is not an endorsement of beliefs shared by the outfit; or anyone besides myself. Furthermore, this post is not an attempt to foster a discussion of any of those beliefs. I like the show, I think you should give it a try. That's about it. If this offends you, I apologize; and my opinions are not any official part of TXR leadership or attitude.
