First, it's good. It's really very good.
For those who have played WoT it will seem much more difficult and intense than that game. WoT is extremely arcadey, even though it didn't really feel like it, when it was the only kid on the block. Let's talk about what made it that way. WoT has an HP system. No matter what, a tank isn't dead until all of its health is gone. Fire and ammo-racking can make that happen quickly, but the HP still has to be zeroed, to finish a tank. The driving and control is also extremely simple. While it does take a bit to get a tank up to full speed, acceleration is smooth and fairly quick. You feel like you're quickly throttling up. Also, there is very little rocking on the chassis. Yes, there is recoil, and yes, you have to settle in, to shoot, but those only take up fractions of seconds, literally. The tanks feel like heavy objects, but unevenly. You drive right through wooden buildings, even at low speed, but you also stop almost on a dime and turn even better.
War Thunder tanks change all of that. They are much more realistic. On your HUD you see both your gear, and your RPMs. To accelerate, you will watch those RPMs spike, and then the gears change. And while this is happening, you mind will be shrieking that you're under fire and it can't understand why you're not rolling faster. You can even bind gear-shifting, for maximum efficiency (I think you have to in SB), but you still have to drive it like an actual vehicle. You need the proper RPMs to sustain the engine. It takes a long while to get up to speed. And then, you have to be very careful with your turns. At low speeds, you have to lay on the turn buttons to make it rotate, as you should. At high speeds, you just goose the turn buttons, you'll skew the back end around braking a track at high speeds. It's a lot of momentum to try and reverse. The handling gets really squirrely. It feels GREAT. Then, you have to decelerate. These things do not stop on a dime. You aim to hide in a bush, come in fast, hit the brakes, and roll right through it and into the enemy's sight lines. It takes some getting used to Also, pitch is a huge factor. When you come to a stop, the tank is going to rock on its suspension for probably multiple seconds before you are stable to fire. Then, it will rock, some more, when you fire.
And, oh, when you fire, it's a beautiful marksmanship game. There are no HPs to drain. It's like the aircraft, you have to disable them. Keep firing into the tracks or corners and you will never stop that tank. Hit them just right, and you and one-hit anything. Ammo-rack them, kill all the crew, set their gas on fire. You have to learn where the vital systems are on every tank, and then target them, just like a real tanker. And your ammo choices matter. HE will get you nothing. Load up AP or APCR and know the differences. You need to learn how the shells will behave and against different kinds of armor. There are also no invsa-tanks, like in WoT. Your camo rating doesn't hit a certain number and then you disappear. If you park where you can be seen, then everyone will see you. If you park, smartly, no one will see you, even when you fire It is real tank warfare. A stealthy game of hunt and be hunted in giant steel monsters.
Oh, and keep an eye on the skies. It's not like in the current air game where the ground targets are just lit up, but those pilots can see you, if you're not hidden well, and they _will_ bomb you. I've been doing a lot of it. There are few feelings in the game as great as dive-bombing a tank that has another player in it. "A point is clear," you radio to your friendly tanks, "the tank destroyer who's been covering the approach is wreckage; now get in there!" But, watch out for the flakpanzers! If you thought the AAA in the air game, currently could be rough, just wait until you face AAA manned by players. It is so much more intense. Also, watch out for really skilled tankers. I've already shot down biplanes with my main tank guns. You'll have to learn to fly much more carefully, especially since they aren't lit up. You have to search the ground for targets both offensive and defensive.
I can't wait for more of you to get in. It's a blast. And for those of you who are in, but haven't gotten on, yet. *cough*Swatz*cough* All the info you need is in the email they sent you. There is a link to the private CBT forum. On that forum are instructions for copying and tweaking the game client to get you in. There is also a schedule of when the server is up for testing, here, however, that link shouldn't work unless you've been invited to the CBT and linked your invite to your account. Let me know if I can help. I can't wait until we're in our squads, coordinating combined air and ground strikes!
