So Teamspeak does this up and down thing, but thanks to the wonders of the early 1990's intertubes we have a fall back. IRC is a very old and very stable text chat protocol. I have set up a channel, #txr, on the EFnet. How do you use it? The easy answer is ... go to this link for a web based IRC client..enter a name in the Nickname: field and #txr in the Channels: field ...then hit the connect button. [1] If anyone else is on you should be able to communicate with them. I will try to keep myself logged in but if I do not respond it does not mean I have no love for your text...I might be floating in meatspace. I will look into setting up a bot to do announcements and the like. IRC is decades old and has a rich assortment of tools. Much fun can be had on it. For us, for the bottom line, it will be another way to stay connected should the new fangled jimmies fall down and go boom. [1] Yep, there are better clients to be had for the use of IRC...check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat for more info.

The previous community I was in used IRC as a primary means of communication. Using the voice chat was a little extra something that mostly the "cool kids" did. If anyone is looking for an IRC client, I used Hydra IRC back in the day. www.hydrairc.com/content/downloadsThis was 6 years ago, so I don't know what's out there now, but IRC doesn't really change much, and Hydra was always a pretty solid client.

*twitch*... IRC is for zombies now.. Less go way old school, You going to stand up a MUD mod for the IRC server? Words to live by: "Understanding is a Three edged sword: Your side, Their side, and the Truth." - J. Michael Straczynski

There are a ton of ways to hold a voip like client other then our teamspeak I do love irc like the mIRC client I used for pick up scrims and ringers (people to play with you that you don't know personally but may be part of a trusted group). With kidriot and rucursion starting this mlg side it may be good to get all the competitive and maybe casual players to know how to get on and be comfortable with it.
Prolonging problem fixes: One: New server provider. Different providers have similar prices, same service Two: I had ventrilo primarily when I competed on leagues playing counterstrike source and I don't think we ever had a problem more then once. It was the main voip application then but teamspeak may be it now, either way you can have multiple clients it isn't very tough. Three: I haven't looked into it thoroughly but razer comms or some other random client could work for harder situations. These are free but instant fixes. Four: Other teamspeak outfit servers or their own ip as I've seen some voip clients on teamspeak hold hundreds of people, not sure how the admin leaders fill about that though or our fellow outfit members.
Honestly just wanted to throw out a couple of points on how big a list of fixes we have with voip (Voice Over Internet Protocol) services.

IRC might be interesting though for minecraft it is kind of easier just to let each other know in game.
